FORENSIC ENGINEERING

Forensic Inspection

  • Was the Slab Foundation designed according to codes or not?
  • Was the Concrete Forming constructed according to code requirements?
  • Was the Slab Finished properly?
  • Was the Slab poured level, in accordance with ACI codes?
  • Was the Slab properly cured?
  • Were the reinforcing or post tension cables located properly?
  • Were the post tension cables stretched according to the design specifications?
  • Does the compressive strength of the concrete meet the design specifications?
  • Was the soil test conducted in accordance with ASTM guidelines?
  • Is there perched ground water on the site?
  • If the foundation experiences heave: conduct a plumbing test, perched ground water fluctuation test, and search for any past or existing surface drainage problems or improper grading.
  • If all of the investigation and tests for cause of heave are negative, a soil test should be conducted to determine the “Active Zone” of the site. The foundation design should also be studied to determine if the slab and piers were designed for that specific “Active Zone” or not.
  • If the foundation experiences settlement, the investigation should include the following:
  • i.Fill Section
  • ii.Compaction of Fill Section
  • iii.Movement or Failure of Retaining Wall(s)
  • iv.Foundation Design for that specific soil and site
  • v.Investigation of Improper Maintenance of the Foundation
  • All of the findings should be studied according to the applicable codes, guidelines, and any local regulations.
